We are empowering students to build customized word collections!

What do your students do when they encounter new words during independent reading?

Do you want them to speed past new words and miss out on the opportunity to increase their vocabulary?

In this post I will focus on the acquisition and cataloguing of new words.

Students can use my Digital Vocabulary Log (Google Slides)  or Vocabulary Log (PDF) when they encounter new words, empowering themselves to build a customized word collection.

This simple form is suitable for many grade levels and is not subject-specific.

Students add entries to their log as they scope out new words during independent reading. Students create a catalog of the words that they need to know.

⭐There are three columns:

✅Word

✅Source (where the word was found)

✅Definition

Let's take a look at the example below:

The way that I see it...

We should give students autonomy when curating a record of self-selected vocabulary words. Let's train our students to take the lead and embark on the journey to discover new words. As a class family, you can celebrate and share these encounters!
